NatHERS Benchmark Study - Update

A big thank you to all users who have registered to take part in the NatHERS Benchmark Study.

Registrations for the Study have now closed.

Those who have registered for the Study should have received a WELCOME email from the NatHERS Benchmark Study Team sent via MailChimp last Friday.

The WELCOME email is an invitation to commence the Study and contains each participant’s individual login details for accessing the Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS contains an instructional webinar and instructional webinar notes (to be viewed together), the assessment plans/specifications, NatHERS Technical Notes 1 and 2 and the actual quiz where each participant records the rating results they have achieved for their assessment.

Occasionally, emails sent from MailChimp may end up in people’s spam/junk mail folder.

If you have registered for the Study and not received the WELCOME email in your normal Inbox, please check your Spam/Junk Mail folder and Deleted folder.

If the WELCOME email is not in any of those alternative locations, please use the Contact form at to request your login details be resent.

BERS Pro Course - Queensland

Assessors who practice in Queensland are not currently required to be accredited with ABSA or BDAV or licensed with the Queensland Building Services Authority.

To be deemed a competent person in Queensland by a Building Certifier an assessor has to provide evidence that they understand the theories of building thermal performance and have completed training in BERS Pro.

Although the 4 day Short Course in Building Thermal Performance Assessment (Residential) is no longer nationally accredited, the course still meets all the requirements for assessors practising in Queensland to be deemed competent to perform thermal simulations. Participants will receive a Statement of Attendance on successful completion of the course.

The course is ideal for companies wishing to train additional staff within their businesses.

BERS Pro Theory & Software Course - Brisbane : 12 - 15 August 2013

Please register for training on the Solar Logic website

Additionally, with completion of further training with SmartRate, participants will be eligible to attain 2 units of competency from the Certificate 4 in NatHERS Assessment (CPP41212) issued by Education in Building (RTO 32418).

BERS Pro Refresher Courses

Members of the SmartRate User Support Program have told us that they would like software refresher courses scheduled from time to time. Our last round of refresher courses was held in 2012 when Solar Logic introduced BERS Pro V4.2. Whilst the course was mandatory to upgrade to the new version, the course was well received by all who attended.

Recently, BERS Pro 4.2 V110811/A was rolled out and will be gradually taken up by assessors as their annual renewals fall due. There are a number of new features contained in this version and it the installation features have been simplified.

Therefore, we have scheduled 3 refresher courses as follows:

Sydney : 27 September 2013

Brisbane : 16 August 2013

Perth : 2 August 2013

Topics covered include:

  • Review of NatHERS Tech Notes 1 & 2
  • Updating of zoning rules
  • Review of modelling techniques for skylights, clerestory windows, composite wall construction, shadowing from adjacent buildings and elements, and how to use the correct wind shield classification for your project
  • Review of Simple R & C calculator
  • Review of R Gap calculator
  • Review of compound calculator - calculate average insulation values for ceilings that include downlights and/or exhaust fans
  • How eaves are measured correctly
  • Use of wing walls & vertical fins.

A Statement of Attendance will be provided as a record of your attendance.
